The Defense Logistics Agency (DLA) committed $2 billion to acquire strategic and critical materials during fiscal year 2026.[1] It announced the commitment Nov. 6.[1] The announcement does not specify whether the commitment represents obligations or contract value, or identify the materials, suppliers or individual contract values behind it.[1]

Most critical mineral contracts awarded through the agency's Contracting Services Office were targeted demand signals meant to enable domestic production, said DLA Strategic Materials director Eric Mata.[1]

Materials sourced for the National Defense Stockpile can range from high-purity aluminum to vanadium pentoxide.[1] Mining, recovery, recycling, refining and processing can all produce stockpile materials.[1]

## Why it matters

Stockpile acquisitions direct demand toward American material suppliers and processors, Mata said.[1] He said the efforts are helping domestic companies plan production, retain skilled workers and expand capacity where economically viable.[1]
