Leonardo-Rheinmetall venture secures $4.16 billion in Italian Army orders, MF reports

Reuters, reporting in Defense News, cites MF on combat-vehicle and tank orders. Leonardo's CEO could not confirm a signing.

Leonardo and Rheinmetall secured two Italian Army vehicle contracts worth $4.16 billion through their joint venture, Italy's MF newspaper reported, according to Defense News, which carried the Reuters story. Leonardo CEO Lorenzo Mariani could not confirm whether the contract had been signed, saying communication must be coordinated with clients. Rheinmetall declined to comment.1

If confirmed, the orders reported by Defense News would follow the initial Army Armoured Combat System (A2CS) contract with orders for combat vehicles and new-generation main battle tanks.12

Mariani said in Rome that the program was ready to enter production from Leonardo's side, according to Defense News. He said work was progressing on both the tank program and the Future Combat System in cooperation with Rheinmetall. The report gives no breakdown of the contract values, vehicle quantities or delivery schedule.1

The venture's first A2CS supply contract, announced last November, covered 21 combat vehicles. It included another 30 vehicles as options.2

On Jan. 27, 2026, the venture delivered its first four Lynx infantry fighting vehicles to the Italian Army.3

The partners agreed to split the venture's work equally, with 60% of activities planned for Italy, including integration, approval testing, delivery, logistical support and parts of production and development.2

Viasat wins contract for Space Data Network’s mission operations hub

The award includes a $115 million initial task order to design, field and scale the center, under a contract with a $450 million ceiling.

Space Systems Command (SSC) awarded Viasat a competitive indefinite-delivery/indefinite-quantity contract for the Space Data Network Backbone’s Mission Operations Center, the command announced Nov. 5, 2026. The contract carries a $450 million maximum ceiling and a $115 million initial task order to design, field and scale the center.1

Viasat will serve as the network and mission system integration partner as SSC expands its open-architecture ecosystem across multiple space-segment providers. SSC plans to bring mission integration, network operations and data transport management together through the center.1

The effort builds on the multi-vendor acquisition strategy demonstrated in the Space-Based Sensing and Targeting portfolio’s earlier Delivery Order 2 and Delivery Order 3 work. That work involved Amazon LEO for Government, Lockheed Martin, Northrop Grumman, Rocket Lab and York Space Systems.1

Breaking Defense reported that the center will serve as the network orchestration hub for the backbone, a low Earth orbit constellation being built by SpaceX. The network’s near-term focus will be supporting the Golden Dome missile defense initiative, the outlet reported.2

DefenseScoop reported that earlier this year the Department of War awarded SpaceX a $2.3 billion contract to deliver a fully operational backbone prototype by the end of 2027.3

The center is intended to integrate mission systems across multiple constellations and providers.1 Breaking Defense described network orchestration as autonomously shifting data among satellite constellations and ground stations when congestion or jamming slows transmission.2
